After 12 years with Art Access, Executive Director Sheryl Gillilan will resign from the organization on September 30, 2016. She is leaving to pursue new opportunities and challenges in the arts and community service sectors in Salt Lake City. Art Access is seeking a new director who will continue to build the strength and vitality of the organization.

Gillilan began with Art Access in 2004 as the part-time finance manager, and was promoted to assistant director in 2009. After conducting an extensive search in the summer of 2011, the board appointed Gillilan as the executive director. “It has been an honor to be part of an organization that makes a real difference in people’s lives,” Gillilan said.” I have mixed emotions about leaving, but I feel it’s time for the next chapter of my career.”

During Gillilan’s time as director of Art Access, the organization has continued to increase its community presence and is known for its cutting-edge programs and exhibits. She credits dedicated staff and board members with helping to stabilize the organization financially after a severe cutback in federal funds in 2011, and helping to cultivate multiple community partnerships that enable Art Access to reach out more effectively to underserved populations.

“We are proud of the work Art Access has done during Sheryl’s tenure as director,” said MaryLee Peters, Board Chair. “Because of her leadership and vision, Art Access has presented exhibitions and workshops that have initiated positive community dialogue on a variety of sensitive subjects that are not often open for public discussion.”

Art Access’ vision is to demonstrate that the arts connect people across differences and help forge a stronger community. The organization offers high-quality, mission-driven programming focused on capturing the experiences and stories of everyone–especially those who have been disenfranchised.

“The work of Art Access is more important than ever as we continue to witness needless divisions and animosities among people in our country,” Peters said. “We are looking for a smart, dedicated and compassionate leader who will support our staff, board and patrons as we continue to engage respectfully with all members of our community.”
