Kate Skinner, Josh Skinner, Steve Lyman @ Ogden’s Union Station Foundation (Ogden: March 9)

Posted on Updated on

Who: Ogden’s Union Station Foundation & WSU Alumni Jazz present

What: Ogden’s Own Kate Skinner

When: Wednesday, 9 March 7pm

Where: Grand Lobby, Ogden’s Union Station

Why: Jazz!

Ogden’s Union Station Foundation & WSU Alumni Jazz presents Kate Skinner, piano, Josh Skinner, bass, and Steve Lyman drums Wednesday, 9 March, 7pm in the Grand Lobby of Ogden’s Union Station. This is a free, one-hour, all-ages event. Children are welcome as long as they do not disturb the performers or the audience.

Jazz pianist and vocalist Kate Skinner maintains an active performing, composing, and teaching career in the western United States. A native of Ogden, Utah, Skinner pulls influences from the bluegrass and classical roots of her childhood into both her songwriting and performing as a jazz musician. In her teenage and college years, Kate delved into R&B, funk, and hip hop, genres that also continually find their way into her musical explorations helping to create her own unique voice. Part of this unique voice is an obsession with alternative keyboard instruments and a study of the great keyboardists of jazz, rock, and funk.

As a pianist, Skinner is in demand in a variety of performance styles and has performed with the Downbeat-award-winning jazz band from the University of Northern Colorado, Jazz Lab Band I among many other established large and small jazz ensembles. Her work as a vocalist has seen much success among a wide audience of listeners across genres. Kate’s compositions and playing have won multiple awards, including a Downbeat award for Outstanding Vocal Performance and a Jazz Education Network award for composition.

2014 saw the release of two new albums that Kate was highly involved in, one of which is a straight-ahead jazz quartet called Divergent featuring her writing and performing. The second is Born to Wander a bass-guitar-voice trio with Erik Applegate and Steve Kovalcheck. The group is founded in jazz and explores interpreting classic folk and rock tunes along with jazz standards. Kate believes that the pursuit of honest and creative projects is the lifeblood of any artist and she strives to continually push herself and widen her scope to new influences and excitements.

Skinner is currently adjunct faculty in the jazz, theory, and voice departments at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. She is also a doctoral candidate in jazz studies at the University of Northern Colorado, studying orchestral conducting as a secondary area.

EXHIBITIONS

A CALL TO PLACE: THE FIRST FIVE YEARS OF THE FRONTIER FELLOWSHIP
Rio Gallery
MAR 18 – MAY 13
Please join us for the Gallery Stroll opening reception on March 18, 6-9pm

The town of Green River lies within the lunar landscape of eastern Utah: rock cliffs reveal striations of sediment with boulders clustered below fracturing buttes. Green River is a place where the land is plentiful and the red dust, burnt cliffs, and lonely sky lie just beyond the end of its roads. Prismatic sunsets give way to stars that shine bold and close. If you’ve never seen monolithic terraces under an oceanic sky, Green River is the seeing place. The only town of consequence for many miles, Green River has been a welcomed sight to travelers for well over a century. Uranium mining, the construction of a missile base, and other economic booms led to times of prosperity that proved short-lived. As jobs disappeared and the newly built Interstate 70 routed travelers around, rather than through the town, businesses closed shop, buildings fell into disrepair, and the town’s population dwindled to its current size of 952. During the recent recession, Epicenter began partnering with the city and residents to reverse Green River’s economic misfortunes and strengthen the community.

Epicenter’s visiting artists, Frontier Fellows, prove an integral part of this revitalization by discerning and celebrating Green River’s rural pride and pioneering spirit. The exhibition, A Call to Place, features the first five years of Frontier Fellows, 50 visiting artists and collaborators who have each spent up to one month in residence generating place-based work in Green River alongside the community.

HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY: RECENT WORK BY LAUREL CARYN
Alice Gallery
MAR 11 – MAY 6
Please join us for the Gallery Stroll opening reception on March 18, 6-9pm

History of Photography: Recent Work by Laurel Caryn investigates the transformations in contemporary image culture; how we record history through photographs and how that process has been changed – and to some degree – lost, with digital technology. By combining the 19th century process of cyanotype (acrylic paint and the discarded database of art history slide images), Caryn confronts the viewer with the paradigm shift in how we record and receive visual information, the role of the spectator in that process (are we passive or complicit?), and the impact of the memory trace all photographs contain.

RAW AND COOKED
Rio Gallery
JAN 15 – MAR 11, 2016

In Raw and Cooked, artists Paul Crow, Jim Jacobs, and Joshua Winegar explore the relationship between culture and nature, one of the oldest human tropes.

PUBLIC ART

DEADLINE: APRIL 26, 2016
Request for qualifications from artists and/or artist teams interested in creating site specific artwork(s) for the new facility that will provide a full-time pre-school, clinical/therapeutic facilities, administration space, and a facility to host community events. The art selection committee is searching for artists who will honor and incorporate the mission of the schools in their vision for the project. Proposed works should acknowledge and celebrate these diverse communities and contribute to the beauty and unique themes of life and education for deaf, blind, and deaf-blind children and their families. Visit our website for more information on this and other opportunities coming shortly.

COMPLETED PROJECTS

Sky Veil by Catherine Widgery has been completed and installed as part of the Ogden Juvenile Court facility. The work, composed of 2000 square feet of dichroic glass and stainless steel, is part of the north facing window mullions on four floors of the building. The colored reflections animate the corridors with movement from the streets below as well as offering colored views of the landscape behind you as you walk east or west down the corridors.
