Posted on Updated on

West Elm and Craft Lake City announce the June Soap Making Workshop with Tami Thornton of Beehive Soap & Body Care. The workshop will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at West Elm City Creek from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Tami Thornton started making soap while completing her bachelors degree in the summer of 2009. Finding resources from the internet and her local community, Thornton transformed her business, Beehive Soap & Body Care from a hobby into the thriving business it is now. Her skills and dedication have lead to her appointment to the Board of Directors of the Handcrafted Soap & Cosmetics Guild. At this workshop, participants will learn how to create their own glycerin soap.

“The method of soap making is really fun,” Says Thornton. “You get to choose your color, fragrance and mold to use. The soaps will be ready to take home and use right away, or they make great gifts!”

West Elm, a home furnishings retailer that helps and engages customers to shape their personal style in their homes, hosts the Craft Lake City DIY Workshop Series Presented By West Elm once a month at the West Elm Salt Lake City location at the City Creek shopping center. ACME Session I | Museums: What Are They Good For? @ Utah Museum of Fine Arts (SLC: March 9)

Posted on

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) is launching a new outreach initiative dedicated to rethinking the public role of museums. The ACME Sessions—ACME stands for Art, Community, Museum, Education—are abimonthly series of roundtable public exchanges where participants can dream and articulate new models of education and community engagement through art. The series is presented in partnership with the Salt Lake City Public Library.

The first ACME Session, Museums: What Are They Good For?, will be held in The City Library’s Level 4 Conference Room on Wednesday, March 9 at 7 pm (arrive early for refreshments at 6:45 pm). Local museum directors will share candid insights about their institution’s goals, challenges and efforts to be more inclusive. Discussion leaders are Gretchen Dietrich, UMFA; Sarah B. George, Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU); Alexandra Hesse, The Leonardo; and Kristian Anderson, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA).

“ACME Sessions are co-learning experiences,” says Jorge Rojas, UMFA director of education and engagement. “Our goal is to transform communities by exchanging information and knowledge contributed by all participants for the enhancement of everyone involved.”

The ACME Sessions will bring together Salt Lake City’s most creative, inventive and cross-disciplinary minds—educators, artists, museum professionals, university faculty and students, engineers, scientists, technologists, activists, researchers and others. Sessions are designed in collaboration with contributing community organizations and individuals, and will explore topics such as the role of hip-hop in education, the best ways to build creative community, art and identity and more. Future sessions will be held at various library branches.

For additional information, please visit umfa.utah.edu/acme.

The ACME Sessions are part of the UMFA’s new ACME Initiative, which also includes an ACME Lab—a flexible physical space for research, creative exploration and exhibitions—expected to launch within the UMFA when the Museum reopens in spring 2017. The UMFA Marcia and John Price Museum Building is temporarily closed for remodeling and reinstallation, but the Museum is hosting educational programs throughout the closure period.
